In this JSTOR Article, the return of a Sioux Indian to Wounded Knee reveals the story of a young girl who came to be known as Lost Bird. While Lost Bird stands as a symbol for the massacre, the interesting fact of this article is that a Sioux Indian who had assimilated to American culture returned to the battlegrounds where his tribe lays dead. This creates the social identity that many Sioux Indians returned to the battlefield, in spite of the cold weather and dead bodies. What one may pull from this, is that even though the Natives were assimilated, they still were part of their tribe.
